The CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course provides you with the knowledge, skills and qualification to work with children in a variety of roles and settings such as preschools, long day care services, child care centres and family day care.
This course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of how a child’s mind and body works and the developmental milestones a child typically reaches.
It also provides you with all the information you need to know to work in the early childhood industry in Australia, including first aid, health and safety, Australian law, regulations and the peak government agencies you will work alongside of as a Diploma graduate. The diploma course also provides you with the advanced skills to develop and maintain excellent partnerships with the families and children in your care.
Career opportunities include being a Room Leader in a child care centre, Early Childhood Educator, Family Day Care Educator, In Home Care Educator and Nanny.
Students enrolling in the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care must have successfully completed a CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.

On successful completion of the course you will be issued with a CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care where competency has been achieved.

Entry to this qualification is open to students who hold a CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or a CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills is required to enrol in this course. Macquarie Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre enrolment process.

The completion time for the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care and Care may vary according to the educational background and any relevant experience of the student.
The student will be expected to complete approximately 30 hours of study per week (full time or the equivalent part time) comprised of livestream video classes online or face-to-face classes and at home study.
Students are required to complete 280 hours of work placement in a regulated children's education and care facility in Australia.

Credit transfer (CT) is defined in the AQF as follows:
- Credit transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications.
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is defined in the AQF as follows:
- Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.
This is underpinned by the AQF definition of credit as follows:
- Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications.
- Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

Assessment (including recognition of prior learning) must:
- Meet the requirements of the relevant training package or accredited course, and
- Be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence, and
- Meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements.
For this course assessment will entail the following:
- Written assessment and/or verbal assessments;
- Practical simulation and group role play;
- Independent and/or group research and class presentation;
- Work placements practical skills and observation by the assessor.
Students are required to complete 280 hours of work placement in a regulated Early Childhood Education and Care facility where you will work as a volunteer student during work-placement.
Please note: The practical workplace component is scheduled at various stages through the course. Please be aware that this schedule may need to change should Government COVID-19 restrictions be in place when the work placement is scheduled.
Before commencing work placement, you will be required to obtain one or all of the following which will be confirmed during the enrolment process and at your course induction. If required Macquarie Community College will assist you with this application process.
- A current Working with Children’s check (free of charge for volunteers)
- A current National Criminal History check (between $50-$60)
- An up to date vaccination record (any GP or vaccination costs)
- Suitable work placement clothing is required: i.e. black pants, white polo shirt and leather (or leather-like) fully enclosed shoes with non-slip soles.
Diploma courses can be a pathway to university. Please check with your preferred university campus to confirm options for entry and advanced standing.

Classroom based: experienced and engaging trainers will take you through the course material face to face with an individual assessment for each unit of competency and a variety of delivery modes to ensure individual learning styles are catered for.
