This course is for calligraphy students who have completed a Calligraphy Introductory course and wish to learn more and improve their skills.
You will be able to extend your calligraphic knowledge by working on projects and scripts of your own choice. This Intermediate Calligraphy course is also suited to you if you have not done calligraphy for some time and are looking for a refresher course.
As well as a revision of pen skills, this calligraphy course explores advanced script writing techniques, nib and line relationships and layout/design. Our expert tutor will help you formulate ideas for your calligraphy project.

Course Outline
This course involves a combination of demonstration and practical work.
- Discussion of possible projects, scripts and relevant historical background;
- Revision of pen skills;
- Advanced script writing techniques;
- Formulation of ideas for projects;
- Script writing practice;
- Creation of a variety of relevant layouts and designs;
- Nib and line relationship exploration and interlinear spacing;
- Decoration of letterforms, use of colour and flourishing, where applicable;
- Completion of a calligraphy project of your own choice.
Course Outcome
- By the end of the course you will be able to apply more advanced techniques to a calligraphy script and use them, together with a suitable layout design, to produce a finished product.
What to Bring
- Basic calligraphic equipment. Any extra equipment needed for particular projects will be discussed during the term.
Prerequisite: Essential
- This level is for students who have completed an introductory course in calligraphy. It is also suitable for students who have not done calligraphy for some time and are looking for a refresher course.
