Calligraphy Celtic Art - Lattice Knots - Sydney Course

Celtic Art has five elements of design: Knots, Spirals, Step Patterns, Key Patterns & Zoomorphic design. This course focuses solely on Celtic Knots, starting with basic lattice knots and how to use them in different shapes, to designing your own patterns within a Celtic knot.

This course will take you step-by-step through drawing each Celtic knot design, using a proven simple method that makes the process easy. Starting with small designs and building into large layered carpet pages of pattern.

Course Outline

This class is teacher directed with clear explanations and demonstrations of the correct poses and alignment.

In this course you will learn:

  • How to draw Celtic knots using a diamond dot grid
  • How to use ‘walls’ within a Celtic lattice knot to change the pattern
  • How to draw Celtic knots within a variety of shapes
  • How to layer Celtic knot patterns within an overall design
  • How to outline your designs
  • How to transfer your designs onto quality art paper
  • How to apply colour using your favourite media

Course Outcome

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Draw Celtic knots using a diamond dot grid

  • Draw Celtic knots within a variety of shapes
  • Layer Celtic knot patterns within an overall design
  • Outline your designs using a pigment marker
  • Transfer your designs onto quality art paper
  • Apply colour using your favourite media

What to Bring

Materials list for students –

  • 2B mechanical/pacer pencil
  • Ruler, 30cm or longer
  • Eraser
  • Compass & Protractor
  • 0.4 Pigment marker, eg. Artline marker
  • Colour media, what you have or prefer to use: colour pencils; pigment markers; other felt tip markers; OR
    ○    Paints – water colours or watercolour gouache, acrylics.
    ○    Empty jar, for rinse water
    ○    Rag, soft & absorbent like t-shirt fabric
    ○    Fine pointed round brushes no.0 & no.1

Prerequisite: Essential

You will need to have the ability to trace a line image.
