The Introduction to Community Services provides a pathway to entry into the workforce. This industry offers a wide range of job opportunities to people from all backgrounds and with a diverse range of skills.

This course is suitable for people from non English speaking backgrounds with little or no experience within the industry and is part of SKILLS4You, a holistic program designed to train and support migrant women into caring careers (aged care, childcare, disability care) with quality fee-free* training and wrap-around support.

It is delivered by both Community Services trainers and English teachers and is the perfect transition from English classes to full Community Services qualifications such as CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing and Disability) and CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care that will help you further progress your career.

The Health Care and Social Assistance industry is the largest employing industry in Australia and has experienced continuous employment growth since 2001. In 2021, there were approximately 1.8 million people employed in this industry, which is projected to increase to more than 2.0 million by 2025.

Course Outline

In the Introduction to Community Services you will learn some of the basic tasks to work effectively in the Community Services sector. The skills include:

• Time Management
• How to Communicate in the Industry
• Safe Work Practices
• Providing First Point of Contact

The course also covers a range of foundation skills including:

• Developing a Learning Plan
• Interacting with others at Work
• Source and Use Workplace Information 
• Workplace Documentation

Course Outcome

At the end of this course participants will have a broad understanding of the opportunities available in the Community Services industry and some basic understanding of some of the requirements of the industry.

They will have exposure to common vocabulary and practices and the expectations for verbal and written communication and documentation.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be issued a certificate in CHC22015 Certificate II in Community Services where competency has been achieved, giving you the skills to participate in further study in preparation for employment.

Prerequisite: Essential

An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills is required to enrol in this course. Macquarie Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre-enrolment process.

*Eligibility criteria apply. This training is fully subsidised by the NSW and Australian Governments, and as a result your fee is determined through Training Services NSW formal eligibility criteria. Students will need to supply the required evidence in accord with the requirements of Smart and Skilled eligibility.

Students who are eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and/or credit transfer from previous study will have their fee adjusted to reflect this. The amended fee will be confirmed by Training Services NSW and will be reflected in the adjusted Student Fee Statement.

Payment Plans are available through Macquarie Community College for Smart and Skilled eligible qualifications. 10% deposit OR $40 (whichever is greater) required upon enrolment followed by Interest-free payment plan. Payment methods: EFTPOS, Direct Deposit, Direct Debit, Visa or MasterCard.

Study Load

The course will run 2 days per week – in addition some work will be required between classes to complete the assessments.

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

Credit transfer (CT) is defined in the AQF as follows:

• Credit transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is defined in the AQF as follows:

• Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.

This is underpinned by the AQF definition of credit as follows:

• Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications.
• Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment (including recognition of prior learning) must:

• Meet the requirements of the relevant training package or accredited course, and
• Be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence, and
• Meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements.

For this course assessment will entail the following:

• Assessment methods include written, oral and practical tasks and and assessments. You will be informed when assessments are to take place.

No work placement is required for this course.

What Can I Study Next?

Upon completion of the CHC22015 Certificate II in Community Services, you may go on to study CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing & Disability) or CHC30121 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
