Furniture Restoration and French Polishing - Sydney Course

Work on your own furniture learning the basic processes of stripping, surface preparation, staining and filling. Tutor is a specialist in repairs, restoration, and French polishing.

Course Outline

Course Outcome

  • Students will gain the confidence, skills and knowledge in furniture restoration and french polishing techniques - so that they are able to complete small or large projects at home.

What to Bring

  • Confirmation letter
  • Pen and paper
  • SMALL furniture items eg. coffee table or chair (in good condition and ready for polishing).
  • Paint stripper - The preferred one is Polystrip Original that can be purchased from Bunning.  Do not purchase a cheap paint stripper/ low odour stripper. 
  • Methylated spirits
  • Rags - Recommended: White cotton fibre. Tea-towel size. Bring 2-3 each week.
    *Abrasive paper - Recommended: NOT Wet or Dry. Purchase either aluminium oxide based OR garnet paper (for timber). Can be purchased from Bunnings. Gradings: 120, 180 or 220.

Special Note: Clothing to bring:

  • Vinyl gloves
  • Apron
  • Wear comfortable clothing and well supported (closed-in) shoes

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • No previous experience required. Students with basic and advanced skills welcome.

Important Information

  • As there is restricted parking, larger item projects will require students to negotiate with others to assist carrying their projects to the class.

Delivery Mode

Classroom based: experienced and engaging trainers will take you through the course material face to face.

Classroom based learning for this course includes:

  • Scheduled class times and sessions
  • Interaction with your trainer and other students
  • Class is held in a large room, using flat tables.
  • Class is a mixture of practical work and demonstration.
