The Australian Spoken English and Pronunciation - Advanced Plus level course is designed for people who have mastered fluency in speaking English but sometimes struggle to understand Australian pronunciation, idioms and slang. Whilst there are many variations of the Australian accent, our courses focus on mastering the standard Australian accent commonly heard in Sydney city.

Learn how to sound more 'Aussie' and understand typical Aussie phrases in a supportive and encouraging environment so that you can present yourself with more confidence at work or social situations.

The Australian Spoken English and Pronunciation - Advanced Plus course is suitable for people who:

• Want to sound more like a native Australian speaker
• Are familiar with a range of Australian vowel sounds and desire to master the entire range
• Want to build confidence using Australian English phonology

At the Advanced Plus level, you will learn more about extensive complex rules and patterns of Australian English pronunciation. Your lessons will concentrate on practical workplace conversations in a simulated environment that incorporate Australian idioms and routine presentations done in a standard Australian accent. We will teach you how Aussies stress sentences, connect speech and use intonation. We will help you neutralise and fine tune your accent in order to sound more Australian. We will help you perfect your understanding of Aussie sounds.

If you find yourself sometimes shying away from speaking in formal situations because you lack confidence in pronunciation, then this course is for you.

Course Outline

In this Australian Spoken English and Pronunciation - Advanced Plus course you will learn:

• More complex rules and patterns of Australian pronunciation
• Australian vowel and consonants
• Australian Phonetics
• An extensive range of Australian idioms
• Variety of Australian slang
• Australian sentence stress
• Australian intonation

Course Outcome

By the end of the course you will have mastered having a conversation whilst fine tuning your best Australian accent. You will be more familiar with common Australian slang and idioms. You will be more confident in speaking with and understanding Australians in everyday situations.

You will also learn how to deliver a presentation in a work place (simulated environment) in your best Australian accent.

At the end of the course, you will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the units where competency has been achieved.

What to Bring

• All course material will be sent to you and is inclusive of course fees.
• You will need a pen and paper for taking notes.
• For remote learning online Zoom classes, you will need access to the internet and a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone in order to participate.

Prerequisite: Essential

An appropriate level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills is required to enrol in this course. Macquarie Community College may conduct an LLN assessment as part of the pre enrolment process.

Students in this course will be required to have English communication skills at the upper intermediate level or above.

The NSW Government’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Program provides additional support to disadvantaged students who have barriers to studying a full qualification. The ACE Program aims to promote access and increase vocational education and training outcomes for those who experience significant barriers to training and employment.

This may include students who are:

• living with a disability
• long-term unemployed
• Commonwealth welfare recipients and their dependants
• migrants/refugees who are unemployed or underemployed

Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

Credit transfer (CT) is defined in the AQF as follows:

• Credit transfer is a process that provides students with agreed and consistent credit outcomes for components of a qualification based on identified equivalence in content and learning outcomes between matched qualifications.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is defined in the AQF as follows:

• Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.
  This is underpinned by the AQF definition of credit as follows:
• Credit is the value assigned for the recognition of equivalence in content and learning outcomes between different types of learning and/or qualifications.
• Credit reduces the amount of learning required to achieve a qualification and may be through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning or advanced standing.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment (including recognition of prior learning) must:

• Meet the requirements of the relevant unit of competency, training package or accredited course, and
• Be conducted in accordance with the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence, and
• Meet workplace and, where relevant, regulatory requirements.

For this course assessment will entail the following:

• Assessment methods include written and oral tasks, practical tasks and observation by the assessor. You will be informed when assessments are to take place.

After completing this study, you can complete FSK20119 Certificate II Skills for Vocational Pathways.

Classroom based: experienced and engaging trainers will take you through the course material face to face with an individual assessment for each unit of competency and a variety of delivery modes to ensure individual learning styles are catered for.

• Scheduled class times and sessions
• Livestream video classes online
• To prepare you for work placement, approximately (6) face to face sessions will take place in our practical room at Blacktown
• Interaction with your trainer and other students during livestream video sessions
• Mixed mode learning - using course books, online resources and practical sessions
• Ongoing trainer support to each individual student via video, email, phone and/or online chat groups
