In this Drawing for Beginners course, you will discover the basic guiding principles of drawing. This easy step-by-step program, will teach you how to really see your subject correctly, how to portray them on paper and express on paper what interests you about your subject.

Using pencil and charcoal, you will learn how to draw from life, instead of photos, to produce studies of hands, buildings, flowers and landscapes. You will learn how to understanding form, perspective, light and shade, mark-making, scale, perspective, sight-sizing, contour drawing, ellipses, grids, tonal analysis and composition.

This course is suitable for beginners or those wanting to build on their current skills. It is an introduction into the world and techniques of drawing.

Course Outline

In this course you will learn:

  • Understanding form
  • Perspective
  • Light and shade
  • Still life
  • Landscapes
  • Mark-making, scale, perspective, sight-sizing
  • Contour drawing, ellipses, grids
  • Tonal analysis and composition

Course Outcome

  • You will learn the basic elements of capturing our 3-dimensional world on paper.

What to Bring

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper cartridge – A3 is a good size
  • A range of pencils e.g. HB, 2B, 3B, 6B
  • Ruler, sharpener, eraser

Prerequisite: Desirable

  • This class accommodates those whose skills are at a beginner level and also welcomes those who wish to refresh and enhance their existing drawing skills.
