Crochet - Beginners - Sydney Course

Learn a new skill and join the crafting craze. Crochet is the new ‘Mental Yoga’. It has been proven to aid mindfulness, release stress and increase concentration. Learn to use all 10 fingers to engage with yarn and colour, and learn new stitches and create your own crocheted articles. It could be anything from bags, scarves, clothing, jewellery or home decoration.

During this course you will learn how to crochet the basic stitches with symbols (slip stich, Single crochet, half double crochet, double/treble crochet), learn how to make ‘Post stitches’ & learn new stitches like chevron, make a granny square, create and join motifs and shapes like triangles, hexagons and circles, design your own items and explore various ideas to create your own masterpiece at home. Starter kit supplied by tutor - included in course fee.

Course Outline

This is a course aims to introduce the various concepts of crochet as outlined below. (not in chronological order).
Participants will be exposed to various projects and will be expected to complete the course with a bag OR a pair of gloves OR a scarf. The students will also leave with multiple ideas for projects stemming from concepts learnt in the class.

Topics include:

  • Knowing your yarn (cotton, wool, acrylic etc) & Knowing crochet hooks and sizes
  • Learn how to hold the crochet hook and yarn
  • What is tension when creating fabric
  • Understanding how to start a chain in crochet
  • Learning the basic three crochet stiches with symbols (slip stich, Single crochet, half double crochet, double/treble crochet)
  • How to make ‘Post stitches’ & learn new stitches like chevron
  • Learning how to make a granny square
  • Learn motifs and shapes like triangles, hexagons and circles
  • Learn how to join motifs
  • Interpreting and reading simple patterns
  • Working with colours and a colour wheel
  • How to change colours on a project
  • Introducing how to make circles in crochet & designing with circles
  • Learn to make crochet motifs e.g. snowflakes
  • Designing with granny squares & motifs (projects with motifs)
  • Learn increase and decrease
  • Learn to make bunting
  • Ideas for making simple garments and concepts of shaping

Introduction to Yarn

Session Two

Learn Crochet stitches such as Single Crochet, Double Crochet/ Half treble crochet & Treble crochet
Introduction to reading crochet patterns and the symbols and names of each stitch
Learn Turning chain and how to crochet for a straight seam
Tension/Gauge when creating fabric
How to wind off yarn

  • Session Three:

Introduction to Granny Squares, read a granny square pattern
Learn the mathematical basis for Granny squares
Learn how to grow rows in granny squares

Sessions Four - Six

Discuss granny square projects and ideas

Discuss colour and read the colour chart

Learn colour change in Crochet

Attempt a granny square with multiple colours

Learn different techniques to join crochet squares

Discuss Granny square Projects and ideas (By now most students will be able to make granny squares at home to make either fingerless gloves, bag or scarf)

Finishing off your piece in crochet

Additonal Topics:

Learn Triangles, Hexagons and Circles in Crochet

Look at making items such as bunting.

Discuss motifs in Crochet : such as Snowflakes

Learn Chevron stitches (or Ripple stitches) for blankets

Introduction to online resources: searching patterns, exploring websites such as Pintrerst and pattern reading.

Prerequisite:

  • This course is designed for beginners and assumes no prior knowledge of the craft. This course is also suitable for those who have acquired some knowledge of crochet and would like to revise and further their skills.

  • Tutor will provide materials (including yarn and hooks) - value $20. Included in course fee.
  • For on-campus classes only: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your first lesson only.
