This is a course for beginners, and assumes no prior knowledge of painting but is also suitable for those with some painting experience. The beginners course is flexible so that it can cater for any level of experience.
Since painting and calligraphy share many of the same materials and techniques, the relationship between the two art forms has always been a close one in China and for over a thousand years the twin arts have been known as a unity.

A beginner's course for those who would like to explore Chinese art, this class will start with the basic skills of brush and ink control in order to write basic calligraphy strokes that can be applied into landscape and animal painting.

Course Outline
In this course, you will learn:
- 4 treasures of instrument in studio
- Calligraphy skill is identical to painting skill
- Brush and ink control
- 8 Basic strokes in current regular script
- Cosmology is identical to aesthetic
- Yin Yang contrast table
- 6 canons of Chinese painting
- Chinese San Sui perspective
- 3 prototype trees in landscape
- Animal painting using calligraphy skill
- Inscription and seal usage
- Pigment and colour usage
Course Outcome
By the end of the course you will:
- Basic skill in both calligraphy and painting
- Deeper understanding of Chinese aesthetic
- Painting is identical to drawing in Chinese brush art
- Usage of Chinese Xuan paper , ink, and different pigments
- Ying Yang theory in Chinese art
- To know where to buy relevant material and get useful resources
What to Bring
- Chinese Xuan paper
- Chinese bottle ink
- Chinese brush( preferably small size White Cloud or Orchid Bamboo)
- Ink and water container
- Plastic or pottery palette
- Art supply advice from teacher in first meeting

Tea and coffee supplied.

Delivery Mode
Classroom based: experienced and engaging trainers will take you through the course material face to face.
Classroom based learning for this course includes:
- Scheduled class times and sessions
- Interaction with your trainer and other students
- Class is held in a well-lit hall, using flat desks to work on.
- Classes will start with an introduction to the day’s exercise, then students work on individual pieces. Tutor will circulate throughout the class with advice and encouragement as needed.
